NEWS BRIEF: Eighty councils shortlisted by Government

Eighty councils were shortlisted by the Government for its Beacon Council Scheme this week. The scheme, set up in 1999 to identify authorities to act as centres of excellence, includes ten key service areas such as better local transport and crime and disorder partnerships. The Government will announce which councils qualify for beacon status next April. For details, visit www.odpm.gov.uk.
