Prescott prize for Cornwall scheme

A community regeneration scheme in Falmouth, Cornwall, has become the first ever winner of the Deputy Prime Minister's Award for Sustainable Communities. John Prescott this week awarded the prize to the Beacon Regeneration Community Partnership, a multi-agency group led by residents that has turned around an estate dogged by crime, poor health and high levels of teenage pregnancy. The scheme has contributed to a 40 per cent drop in burglary rates and health complaints, as well as improving the exam results for local children (above).
