NEWS BRIEF: Disadvantaged schools to receive money

More than 1,000 primary schools in disadvantaged circumstances will receive extra money and support following the expansion of the Excellence in Schools Initiative. In 2004/05 £16 million will be available and £37 million in 2005/06. Speaking, listening and communication skills will be a particular focus of the initiative which aims to raise pupils' aspirations. A further £20 million will be available to support development of Foundation/Early Years focusing on speech, language and parental engagement. The authorities were chosen because of the high numbers of disadvantaged children living in families dependent on Income Support or Income-based Jobseekers Allowance.
