New compulsory purchase powers given to councils have been attacked by campaign group the Country Land and Business Association. Previously, a council had to show why land was needed, but the proposals will allow them to acquire land if they think it will facilitate development. CLA president Mark Hudson said: "There will be a surge in authorities taking privately owned land for what purpose happens to be in fashion."
