Opinion: Editorial - Labour's daycare pledge should be for all parents

With the economy buoyant, for many of the demographic that used to be called Generation X, it's childcare, stupid. Lone parenthood is more common in this generation than any before. In spite of record numbers of jobs in the economy, nearly half of lone parents are unemployed. For many, a paid job is scarcely worthwhile once the costs of looking after their children are factored into the weekly budget. Even with family tax credits, the prohibitive cost of daycare is still for many the sting in the tail of the benefits trap.
