Winning wheels

A children's bike track in one of London's most deprived areas has won an award for best community cycling initiative in the capital. The BMX and dirt track at Burgess Park in Southwark received the accolade in this year's London Cycling Campaign London Cycling Awards. The project was designed and built by local youngsters - several hundred of whom now enjoy the use of the track every week. Barry Mason, a local cycling activist, described the Burgess Park facility as "an example of a community project that refused to get bogged down in consultants and bureaucracy".
