As parliament asks what comes next for Cabe, Ben Willis hears calls for a larger, more proactive role, working, for example, to ensure good housing design in the growth plans for the South-East. This week the ODPM select committee launches a two-part inquiry into the "role and effectiveness" of design watchdog the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe). It follows recent inquiries into other non-departmental regeneration bodies including English Partnerships, the Housing Corporation and the Government-sponsored environmental charity Groundwork.
