Rural crafts offer countryside hope of sustainability
The image of the artisan at work, laying a hedge, shoeing a horse or thatching a roof may seem the preserve of Constable paintings, a throwback to a lost age. Yet research published this week by the Countryside Agency claims these crafts are witnessing a dramatic revival and could even overtake agriculture as the mainstay of the rural economy (see p13).
