Scottish house building rate plunges

The number of new homes built in Scotland decreased by 18 per cent between 2007/08 and 2008/09, according to official figures.

The figures, published by the Scottish Government, reveal that 22,569 homes were built in Scotland in 2008/09, down from 27,590 in 2007/08.

The number of new private homes built plunged from 21,659 in 2007/08 to 16,471 in 2008/09.

But the number of new homes built by housing associations and local authorities rose from 4,125 in 2007/08 to 4,913 in 2008/09.

Deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "As these encouraging figures show, record Scottish Government investment is delivering much needed affordable homes and public sector home building is at the highest level since the mid 1990s."
