Unemployment rises to highest in 16 years

The number of people unemployed in the UK jumped by 43,000 to 2.5 million in the three months to February, the highest level in 16 years, official figures revealed today, as experts warned that nearly 600,000 jobs could be shed in the public sector over the next five years.
